Reduce Barriers, Expand Horizons: GeerGarage Makes the Outdoors Accessible for All

Let’s be honest: purchasing tents, stoves, sleeping bags and backpacks sturdy enough for outdoor adventure is pricey. Engaging in an activity, like mountain biking, or paddle boarding, can be expensive too. These upfront costs are a barrier to participating for many.

Renting is always an option, but those costs can be unclear. We address this at GeerGarage. Through competitive rental pricing designed to promote accessibility, we open (out)doors for renters and gear owners to save and make money from unused, cared-for personal equipment.

Outdoors for everyone

Want more diversity in camping? Start with the gear, says the Los Angeles Times, while addressing the cost of outdoor gear as a barrier to accessibility. The 2020 article speaks to Mo Jackson, who believes that high cost stops people of color from accessing the outdoors. Her solution? Offering free camping kits. She started a GoFundMe page that raised an impressive $55,000 to buy items for free camping kits.

One of her users is quoted saying: "I’m working class. I was intimidated. Did I have what I needed? Would I be warm and comfortable? Camping is an investment, and I’ve always had to prioritize other bills."

A community of Inclusion

With competitive, community-driven rentals, our goal is to reach an indefinite amount of people to maximize accessibility, while allowing gear owners to make money from unused gear. Renters have an opportunity to be part of a local community; of outdoor enthusiasts who share experiences and a love of adventure, but who also feel driven by making the outdoors accessible and prioritizing the planet.
